Coach Tom Bruder is the new Head Coach of Hauppauge Swim Club. Coach Tom has most recently been Assistant Coach of Islip Aquatics, and coached at the Huntington Y in the 1990s.
Tom was a swimmer for West Islip and held five Suffolk County records, and also was five-time All-American at West Liberty State College and New Mexico State University.
Tom maintains a love of the water to this day and can often be seen in the pool between meet sessions. His long connection to Hauppauge began by swimming at one of the first meets held in our pool when it first opened.
Tom’s philosophy of swimming is straight forward: work hard and do the best you can; stretch beyond your current level; get a lot of positive reinforcement from coaches and parents; feel like you’re an important contributor and part of the team; have fun and enjoy yourself!
Anyone who has been to a meet has seen Tom’s supportive style and is often amazed by his cheering for swimmers on other teams and following their times. We are sure that our swimmers will be very excited by Coach Tom’s appointment since so many of them already know him from the deck.
Tom has begun work on a program for our club and is scheduling meetings with the coaching staff to make sure the 2009-10 season gets off to a great start. He has indicated that the current system of having a primary coach assigned to each group will continue, and his goal is to be involved with all levels, know all the kids personally, and make sure that each swimmer gets the most out of the HAA experience.
